What is flamenco?
Though the details of flamenco's origin are unknown, it is believed to have been created by the Romani and other diverse Andalucian Spanish communities within the last 200-300 years. The art of Flamenco is composed of three critical elements: cante (singing), toque (guitar) and baile (dance). Though the art form is believed to be hundreds of years old, it has gained most of its global popularity within the last fifty years. It is an art of expression, beauty, passion, and community. We hope you will join us in this journey called FLAMENCO!
What is our teaching style?
Our main goal in fostering this art form, an art given so generously to us, is to equip all those interested in learning flamenco with the most essential and fundamental tools to make their experience fulfilling and enjoyable. In addition, it is of the utmost inportance to us as teachers to make sure that the art is preserved and presented with full respect and dignity, staying true to that which makes it flamenco.
We are not interested in promoting a style or personal likes and dislikes. We want the student to develop opinions and stylistic choices on their own, having first fully grasped the basics that those great flamenco artists who went before us all developed over many years.
We equate baile (dance) with music. There can be no separation between them. As a result, understanding flamenco as music first is a priority. Consequently, we encourage and enable those students who wish to learn the art of improvisation, which is the true nature of flamenco, to do so. Flamenco cante (singing) is the heart and very essence of the art, and the guitar and dance should reflect the cante.
